Every month, everyone who participates will be entered to win a $50 gift certificate for a local business. All participants will be entered in a grand prize draw at the Harvest Fest celebrations in September.

This Month in 1951

Spruce Avenue Community League is celebrating our 75th Anniversary in 2026. To bring you back to the year that it all began, here are some fun facts from this month in 1951.

  • The Great Caruso, starring Mario Lanza (still!)

  • Billboard's number one song is Too Young by Nat King Cole

  • Louis St. Laurent is the first Prime Minister to move into the newly designated official residence at 24 Sussex Drive. The last thing St. Laurent wanted in 1950 was to move in the official residence. He eventually consented, as long as he could continue to pay rent (a practice that continued until 1971).

  • A new and revised Indian Act was given royal assent on 20 June 1951. The resulting overhaul removed some of the most offensive political, cultural and religious restrictions. For example, bans on ceremonies like the potlatch and sun dance were removed. Communities were also able to bring about land claims against the government. However, the revisions did not rid the Act of discrimination.
