Spruce Avenue Community League turns 75 years young - Recap & Thank You
We want to thank everyone who participated in our league's 75th anniversary commemorations and celebrations over the summer.
After a well-attended annual Jane’s Walk community history walk in early May, we held monthly film screenings of 1950s related films in June, July and August. We held a “Spruce Ave Then and Now” Photo Contest throughout the summer. We were excited to award the grand prize in the September draw to Angie, who is receiving a gift card to Plaza Bowl. Over the summer, we have been sharing a regular series - This Month in 1951 - in the newsletter, covering the top songs, films, news happenings and more, looking 75 years back.
On September 15, we had an exciting and educational time with “You Think You Know Spruce” 1950s themed Trivia Night at Otto Food & Drink on 95 Street. A full restaurant of teams competed to answer 1950s questions about Edmonton, general knowledge, and counting down the last seven decades of music hits for “Name That Tune”. Funds were raised in support of 75th celebrations, while we supported a local business.
On September 26, we turned our annual Harvest Fest community league day into a 75th birthday party. A display of historical items about the neighbourhood and league was on throughout the day. We are still planning to build a permanent display case inside the hall this winter, as a home for treasured items. In the afternoon, the community came out for classic boardgames, such as Scrabble, Clue and Pick-up Sticks. We held a community supper, capped off by singing Happy Birthday to Spruce Ave and enjoying birthday cake from Italian Bakery. Afterwards, we braved cool and windy weather for a movie on the big blow-up screen in the park: Alice in Wonderland from 1951. Our representatives, MLA David Shepherd, Mayor Andrew Knack and City Councillor Anne Stevenson brought congratulatory greetings, which helped warm up the crowd (in addition to the warmth of freshly popped popcorn!)
We thank our sponsors for Harvest Fest, including John’s No Frills (103 St & 118 Ave), Kingsway District Association, and McDonald’s (111 Ave & 105 St).
While our 75th celebrations have mostly wrapped up (see info about one last activity, below), the Spruce Avenue Community League board takes this opportunity to thank you, our community members, for your support over these past decades. We look forward to another 75 years of community spirit, support, advocacy and relationship-building, all volunteer powered! See you soon at the AGM (October 27th, 7pm).
Movie Night: Hallowe’en & 75th Anniversary

Call for Volunteers
Your community is powered by volunteers. We have plenty of opportunities to get involved and stay informed. We need volunteers of all kinds, whether you have a few hours or desirable skills we would love to have you join us:
December 5 and 6th
We will be looking for volunteers for our upcoming casino on December 5 & 6 at the Grandvilla.
Positions include general manager, banker, cashier and chip runner for the day and night shifts and night shift only the count room.
As this is the league’s major fundraising event we need to confirm volunteers to insure we are eligible to run it. If we can not then another organization will be called in.
The funds raised help us to keep the outdoor rink operational, redevelop the community garden, programming the adults and youth, general operational costs of the hall including utilities and insurance and special community events.
If you are available to help or need more information please email Verna at casino@spruceavenuecommuity.com or call 780-479-8019.
